Brown Thumb

I don’t remember talking about my bucket garden last year. I took some 5 gallon buckets, drilled holes for drainage, mixed soil and manure, and planted both seeds and young plants. I watered and weeded all summer long, and got a small bounty.

Yeah, that’s it. A small pepper. We joke about making a stuffed pepper, and we all could have a nibble.

So I cleaned out the buckets, and I have some green stuff growing:

I guess I’ll wait and see what happens! The funny thing is that last year, brennen had a cabbage he planted at school. So we added it to the bucket garden, and almost a year later we have a plant!!!

So the plans are to have a raised bed this year. I think it’s going to be 18×9 feet. I hope it works! Here’s the “plot”

It needs a ton of work!!!

Gardening May 12

Ok, I tried.  Tried and tried.  Mike tried.  But that damn dirt was sooo hard!  It was rocks, clay, nut shells, and who knows what else!  Eventually we went to Lowes and bought soil and 8 foot landscaping timbers.  At Lowers, I decided to  make the garden 8X4, but when I got home, and laid out the timbers, it was sooo small!  So I ended up with an 8X8 garden.  We bought 30 bags of soil!  Tomorrow I need to go buy more landscaping timbers (to complete my square) and maybe 5-10 bags of cow manure (barf), and a rake/hoe thing.  I’m not sure if I’ll move my plants then or wait until Wednesday.  Pics soon to come!

 

Gardening, kid style

So I’ve been lax on my gardening posts.  Later today I will post pics and tell ya what we’re doing.  But this is cute.  We’ve planted seeds and have been watching the sprouts come up and what not.  I woke up today (after working overnight) and the kids rush me outside and show me this

Hmmmm a bare spot in the grass.  All three boys are squatted around it, looking at it sooo proudly. 

I give in, “what is it?”

“We ate grapes with seeds, and put them in.  It’s spring today, we are making grape plants,” says the Dude.

The Man, “We’re gonna makes grwapes!”

The Baby (now known as Repeat), “GRWAPES!”

 

Gardening

I bought a bunch (stalk, bundle?) of celery the other day, $1.89!  WOW!  I have my ‘garden’ seeded in my jiffy green house and three tomato plants in pots.  I have corn, watermelon, more tomatoes, cantaloupe, peppers, carrots, pumpkins, cucumbers all growing.  I think I may go to some potatoes and onions, but aren’t they hard to grow?

Today we will dig up the garden and go get some compost to mix into it.  Then next week, when my little seedlings are ready, I’ll move them over!
